Yesterday, August 30th, partly inspired and coordinated by my blog post New Orleans Levee Break(s) Before and After, a group of us, most of whom don't know each other and have never met, struggled to create a visual understanding of what was happening to New Orleans, using the tools to hand.

Kathryn,

I wanted to tell you where one of your unidentified photos is. The picture is of St Bernard’s Parish, labeled 38640798_e084f7a713.jpg. The orange-roofed building in the top right of the photo is Home Depot #373 in Chalmette, LA. I’ve attached a Google Earth screenshot that approximates the aerial photo. The location is near 29-56’52” N and 89-58’37” W.

A decontextualized media image which Flickr user dipdewdog posted with the comment "wow. i found this on wwltv.com in the forums."

It seems to me that this is just he sort of image that cries out for a street grid, a comparison satellite Before image, or something, anything to rip it loose from the abstract discourse of the sublime, bringing it back into the frame of reference of people who want to know if grandma's house is under water.

This is the Google Earth superimposition of this photo I posted yesterday, showing water flowing out of a neighborhood, over the levee at Surekote Rd. and into the canal. (In case you're wondering, those little rectangles are the rooves of houses. The big red rectangles are city blocks.) I asked Shawn if he could please do the Surekote picture for me. Thanks Shawn.
