The Sin of Omission
Saturday, October 18, 2014
My 30th anthology came out a little over a month ago. It is a high profile book. I have enjoyed the PR immensely. But. A minority of the articles about the book mysteriously forget to mention my name even though it is on the cover, the title page, and the spine as specified by my contract.
For the first three or four, I ignored the omission and cheerfully retweeted mentions of the offending articles. I have been good humored. But The Chronicle of Higher Education should know better.
Folks, this is a non-trivial issue. Over the course of my career as an anthologist, I have had trouble getting my name on the contract when acting as co-editor; trouble getting my name on the cover even when my name was on the contract; and even trouble getting my name on the check when my name was on the contact, the cover, the title page, and the spine.
It is 2014. I am 52 years old. It really isn't that hard to remember that I am an editor of this book.
Update: The author of this article didn't just leave me out. He managed to omit all the women associated with the book from his article.
Update: My name has been added to the article.
