A category 5 hurricane is headed straight for New Orleans. Some experts are calling this the nightmare scenario. 175 mile an hour sustained winds gusts above 200. Possibly water 40 feet deep in parts of New Orleans. 1000 Oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico at risk.
It could will take months or years to recover. How many will be dead by the time this is over? It could be worse than 9-11. How much damage? Tens of Billions? How high will oil prices go?
The shuttle could be effected since the External Tanks are Manufactured New Orleans. If the plant is hit hard, this hurricane could change the entire future of human space flight. If the plant is severely damaged, will it be worth rebuilding, if it will be too late for ISS. Will plans for a shuttle derived Heavy lift vehicle have to be thrown out before they can formally be presented? We will know by Tuesday.
This storm will surely make history no matter what. Even if it fizzles before land fall.
